MissionSAFE Teens Present on an Empowering Summer
Presentations Highlight Productive and Engaging Summer
MissionSAFE’s end of summer YLSC Summer of Leadership and Service intern presentations on August 15 were a smashing success! It was a fantastic opportunity to see high school aged young people discussing their summer jobs: the challenges, rewards, things they learned, people they met and the difference it made in their lives and their attitude toward a career! Many parents attended and asked insightful questions of the presenters. As always, the poetry group impressed with their poise and heartfelt poems.
The YLSC Summer of Leadership and Service employed over 70 youth this summer. YLSC is a collaborative program that places young people in paid externships at the State House with State Representatives Gloria Fox, Liz Malia and Jeffrey Sanchez; at Tufts Medical Center, Spaulding Rehab, Brigham and Womens Hospital, Whittier Street Health Center and Roxbury Community College, among others. MissionSAFE staff interact with off-site supervisors to assure the summer placement is successful.
The program also places young people in on-site internships, including the wildly popular poetry placement titled “Express Yourself”, Summer Drop-in which provides educational and recreational activities over 30 middle school students not in other programs, and the Health Promoters, who present to younger children on nutrition and fitness, and practice fitness and community service activities throughout the city.
