Healthy Vision Month is an annual observation dedicated to raising awareness about eye health and encouraging proactive steps to protect vision through regular eye exams, healthy lifestyle choices, and protective measures.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 93 million Americans – roughly 4 in 10 – are at high risk for serious vision loss; however, many do not seek care due to barriers such as cost, limited access to services, or lack of awareness.
While vision loss can impact individuals across all populations, people of color, older adults, and those with chronic conditions such as diabetes are disproportionately at risk for vision-related complications.
Regular exams can help detect conditions such as:
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Macular degeneration
- Dry eye syndrome
- Color blindness
While some eye conditions are identified only through examination, others do present symptoms. It’s important to seek treatment if experiencing:
- Blurred or double vision
- Eye pain/discomfort
- Sudden vision loss
- Flashes of light
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Sensitivity to light
- Redness, swelling, or excessive tearing
