Mental Health Awareness During the Holidays

Between get-togethers with family and friends, gift exchanges, special treats, and a general sense of “good cheer,” this time of year represents joy for many. But, for others, the holidays can trigger emotional pitfalls stemming from preexisting mental health issues, financial pressures, the anniversary of the loss of loved ones, an unfulfilled sense of safety and wellbeing and the list, sadly, goes on.
Mental health disparities can factor in heavily during this season of indulgence. And while tolerance, understanding, kindness, and compassion are words that come to mind this time of year, all too often those respects are not demonstrated toward the people who need them the most. It is a cheerless statement of reality that race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status continue to define just who are the “haves” and who are the “have nots.”
During this season when it seems that everyone but you is rejoicing, give yourself permission to ask for support.
Whittier Street Health Center’s Behavioral Health Department consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse practitioners, social workers, and licensed mental health counselors who can help you navigate the emotional roller coaster of the holidays. We treat a variety of mental health issues, including depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and stress-related problems.
Recognize that the holidays are not a mandate for happiness. Take the time needed to acknowledge your emotions, spend time with the people who support you unconditionally, and don’t be afraid to reach out to us if you find the holidays too much to handle.
And remember – you’re not alone. The holidays have a way of bringing up a lot of complicated emotions. If you need help in managing your mental wellbeing, just give us a call.
