National Foot Health Awareness Month
April is National Foot Health Awareness Month. This annual public education campaign, led by the American Podiatric Medical Association (AMPA), aims to promote good foot health and to raise awareness about practices and underlying conditions that can damage our feet.
With 26 bones – about a quarter of all our bones– connected by 33 joints, feet are a fundamental part of the body that are often overlooked and neglected. Bad foot health can quickly impact a person’s overall health as having healthy feet plays a key role in maintaining an active healthy lifestyle.
In 2024, the AMPA’s National Foot Health Awareness Month campaign is highlighting the importance of finding footwear that supports a person’s unique foot needs. As awareness increases surrounding individual foot types, gaits, and underlying conditions, there has been a surge in buying expensive arch support and orthotics which has resulted in more people experience new or increased foot, ankle, and back pain. If your shoes are causing you pain, the AMPA suggests consulting a licensed podiatrist for shoe and orthodontic recommendations tailored to your specific foot size, shape, arch, and gait.
Additionally, National Foot Health Awareness Month is an important reminder about good practices that generally promote good foot health. It is vital to ensure that good foot hygiene is maintained, such as keeping nails trimmed and that feet are completely dried after washing with antibacterial soap.
As we approach the summer, there are several useful tips we should remember as we enjoy the warm weather and sunshine. To avoid sunburn, sun cream should be applied regularly to the tops of the feet and ankles. Limiting walking barefoot in public areas, such as around the pool or in the locker room, can prevent contracting and spreading bacterial infections. To reduce foot swelling caused by heat, it is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
During the colder months, it is crucial to have good-quality footwear that is weather-appropriate and can keep feet warm and dry.
