Men’s Health Month: Strengthening Men’s and Boy’s Health Through Access, Awareness, and Action

  • June 5, 2026

Men in Massachusetts face notably worse outcomes in both physical and mental health than women – this according to Boston Indicators, the research center at the Boston Foundation. Shorter life expectancy, higher rates of injury and overdose deaths, and more limited access to health care are significant challenges for men in Massachusetts, with the largest disparities among Black and Latino men.

The lack of regular health care all too often reflects systemic barriers to access, including limited availability, transportation challenges, and gaps in culturally responsive services. Any or all these obstacles can lead to delayed diagnoses and poorer health outcomes – particularly in communities already burdened by unequal access to care.

These realities underscore the importance of accessible, community-based solutions designed to close those gaps.

At Whittier Street Health Center, our men’s health services are integrated into comprehensive primary care, wellness programs and social services with a goal to remove barriers to care and improve the quality of lives of men and boys.

  • Routine checkups, physical exams, and ongoing health management
  • Chronic disease management
  • Cancer screenings
  • Behavioral health
  • Lifestyle and wellness support
  • Social support and linkage to community resources

Whittier’s men’s health services are supplemented by annual initiatives, chief among which is our annual Men’s Health Summit. Held each June, the summit seeks to bring greater attention to the unique health challenges faced by men and boys, encourage open conversation, and create pathways that promote healing, connection, and equitable access to care.

This year’s Men’s Health Summit “Closing the Gap: Better Health for Men and Boys,” will be held on June 27th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Frederica M. Williams Building, 1290 Tremont Street, Roxbury.

The free event will include a health fair, health screenings, lunch, and a formal program. The Summit will also honor outstanding men’s advocates.

Men’s Health Month may be observed in June, but at Whittier Street Health Center we are committed to providing the highest level of care to all…every day.
