Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month: Inspiring Hope, Empowering Health
Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month is observed every June, a global call to action to raise awareness, promote brain health, and support the fight to end Alzheimer’s and other dementias through research and advocacy.
The statistics are eye-opening. More than 7 million people in the United States currently live with Alzheimer’s disease, with older populations more commonly affected. Gender also plays a role as nearly two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women – this according to the Alzheimer’s Association, which projects that by 2050 some 13 million people in this country will be diagnosed with the disease.
While Alzheimer’s cannot be completely prevented, adapting healthy lifestyle habits and managing medical risk factors can reduce the potential of cognitive decline. These include:
- A healthy, balanced diet
- Regular exercise
- Cease smoking
- Injury prevention
- Taking part in social activities
- Sufficient sleep
- Regular health care, including checkups, vaccines, and screenings
Whittier Street Health Center offers a wide-range of programs that support dementia-related needs including:
- Behavioral health services
- Chronic disease management
- Care coordination programs
- Community wellness and social support programs
As we recognize Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, we’re reminded that by embracing healthy habits and connecting individuals and families with compassionate, community-based support, we can help make a difference in the fight against dementia.
Whittier Street Health Clinic remains committed to empowering patients, caregivers, and the community in general with the resources, care, and advocacy needed to navigate all dementias and brain injuries with dignity, knowledge, and hope.
