Celebrating Dental Hygiene Month
October is Dental Hygiene Month, a time to raise awareness of, and increase education about, oral care. Good dental hygiene practices help prevent cavities and gum disease, boost confidence, and maintain good overall health. It is important to have regular consultations with your oral care team for the early identification of dental issues which could be signs of more serious and chronic health issues, such as diabetes or HIV/AIDS.
Here are some helpful oral hygiene tips from dental hygienists:
- Brush your team at least twice a day,
- Floss daily,
- Brush your tongue,
- Use an antibacterial mouthwash every day,
- Visit your dentist regularly,
- Avoid smoking and other tobacco products.
Whittier Street Health Center is proud to general dentistry, endodontic, periodontics and other oral health specialty service to our diverse patients including underserved and BIPOC (Black, indigenous, and people of color) populations. According to the CDC, there are stark disparities in oral health among many groups of US children and adults. About 33% of Mexican American children and 28% of non-Hispanic Black children have had cavities in their primary teeth, compared with 18% of non-Hispanic White children. Additionally, the prevalence of untreated cavities in the permanent teeth of children and adolescents is about twice as high for children from low-income households as it is for children from higher income households. Whittier’s Oral Care team provide high-quality and accessible health care to underserved populations in Greater Boston.
