Celebrating National Healthy Aging Month: Empowering Seniors at Whittier
September marks National Healthy Aging Month, a time to promote the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of seniors. Healthy aging is not just about longevity; it’s about enhancing the quality of life as we grow older. As we age, it becomes increasingly important to focus on maintaining physical health, fostering social connections, and nurturing mental well-being. With advancements in healthcare and a growing understanding of the aging experience, we can empower seniors to live fulfilling lives filled with purpose and activity.
According to a 2023 Health of Boston report produced by the Boston Public Health Commission, there are parts of Roxbury (our primary service area) where the average life expectancy is a mere 69 years old, while less than half a mile away, in the Back Bay, the average life expectancy is 92 years old. Of the 224 nations in the world, only 16 have a shorter life expectancy than Roxbury. Disparities in health care access and outcomes are dramatic, with a more than twenty-year life expectancy difference between Boston neighborhoods within a distance of two to three miles – although through initiatives such as the Whittier Street Health Center’s Boston Health Equity Program have begun to narrow those gaps in the last decade.
At Whittier, our approach to senior care is holistic and personalized to improve health, quality of life and life expectancy. Coordinated by a specially trained Geriatric Case Manager, our dedicated team of professionals is committed to addressing the unique needs of geriatric patients. We understand that aging brings a host of challenges, but we believe that with the right support, seniors can thrive. Our specially designed programs aim to keep seniors active, engaged, and healthy, ensuring they can enjoy their golden years to the fullest.
Whittier’s senior patients benefit from a comprehensive range of services tailored to enhance their quality of life. We prioritize preventive care, offering essential screenings such as colon, cervical, and breast cancer assessments. Early detection is key, and our team works diligently to ensure that seniors have access to the screenings they need. We also host walking and physical activity sessions to keep seniors physically active. Regular exercise not only promotes physical health but also boosts mood and energy levels.
At Whittier, we recognize that accessing care can sometimes be a challenge for our older population. We offer home visits and transportation assistance, making it easier for seniors to receive the care they need. Additionally, we provide medical supplies assistance and specialist referral coordination, ensuring that our patients navigate the healthcare system with ease.
As we honor National Healthy Aging Month, let’s commit to supporting our seniors. At Whittier, we are proud to be a part of that mission, helping seniors lead healthier and happier lives.
