Recognizing Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: The Importance of Screening
At Whittier Street Health Center, we are committed to promoting health and wellness in our community. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of early detection and prevention of this serious but preventable disease. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, but with routine screenings, we can catch it early and even prevent it.
Why Screening Matters
Colorectal cancer often develops from precancerous polyps in the colon or rectum. Regular screenings can detect these polyps before they turn into cancer, allowing for early treatment and better outcomes. In fact, when caught early, colorectal cancer has a 90% survival rate.
Who Should Get Screened?
- People aged 45 and older should begin routine screenings.
- Those with a family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors may need to start earlier.
- Individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain should consult their doctor immediately.

In 2024, our Health Equity Research Center partnered with Exact Sciences to expand access to colorectal cancer screenings and affordable follow-up diagnostic care for underserved communities, helping to reduce health disparities and improve outcomes for all patients.
