Martin Luther King Day

Please join us for Whittier Street Health Center’s 2024 celebration of Martin Luther King Day on January 12th, 2024 from noon to 2 p.m. in our Community Education Room at 1290 Tremont Street, Roxbury.
Martin Luther King Day is an annual federal holiday that encourages people around the country to reflect on the achievements and legacy of the great civil rights leader, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968). He worked tirelessly to ensure that everybody, regardless of race, religion, or national origin, could be free from violence and discrimination, a dream that he famously spoke about in his speech on August 28th, 1963, in Washington. Revered as America’s greatest advocate for human rights and peaceful protest, Dr. King was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, making him the youngest recipient in the history of the prize.
The holiday was signed into law by President Ronald Regan in 1983 but was not observed in all fifty states until 2000. Today, the holiday is often marked with rallies and speeches about equality, and volunteering in community services.
We will be commemorating Dr. King’s legacy and life of service by distributing winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves, to adult and youth patients. Registration is required for the event.
