Mother’s Day
On March 12th, 2024, mothers, aunts, grandmothers, step-moms, foster moms, sisters, and cousins, will be celebrated across America for Mother’s Day. The holiday is dedicated to showing our love and appreciation for the amazing women in our lives who selflessly work to make every day better for us.
At Whittier Street Health Center, we are grateful for the caring women who nourish our community. We celebrated some of the strong women in our community with our annual Mother’s Day event on March 10th. Carolyn Reynolds, Whittier’s Co-Associate Director of Behavioral Health Services and Adult and Substance Abuse Services, spoke about the importance of self care which can help reduce feelings of exhaustion, stress, and burnout. There was also a presentation about the ‘Strong Women’ quilt which has been created over the last six years by Whittier’s sewing club. The quilt included portraits of several strong women from Roxbury and beyond who have inspired the sewers, such as Billie Holiday, Mother Teresa, and Whittier’s President and CEO, Frederica Williams.
Whittier provides many services and programs to support mothers before, during, and after pregnancy. Our OB/GYN center, led by Dr. Raja Sayegh, offers highly trained and culturally sensitive care to address any health concerns that a woman might experience.
The Centering Pregnancy Program aims to reduce black maternal mortality by raising awareness about potentially life-threatening warning signs during and after pregnancy. Relaunched in 2023 after the COVID-19 pandemic, the program provides vulnerable mothers with essential skills and support through pregnancy and early postpartum. Additionally, the Moms Do Care Program focuses on helping pregnant and postpartum women recovering from opioid addiction.
If you would like to access any of these services and programs, please call the OB/GYN center on 617-989-5322.
