National Cholesterol Education Month/Understanding Cholesterol and Its Impact on Heart Health

National Cholesterol Education Month is observed every September, raising awareness about high cholesterol, its link to heart disease, and the importance of prevention, early detection, and management.

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that our bodies need to build cells and make hormones, but too much of it in the bloodstream can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Routine screening and prevention are essential as high cholesterol often has no symptoms, yet plays a critical role in long-term cardiovascular health.

Boston-area research shows clear cholesterol-specific inequities, finding Black and Hispanic patients present with higher LDL levels (“bad” cholesterol) and are significantly less likely to receive statin therapy – even when their cardiovascular risk matches that of white patients. In addition, decades of Massachusetts-based evidence from the Framingham Heart Study directly point to cholesterol-related disparities in greater Boston, driven by a combination of structural inequities, disproportionate access to preventive care, and under-treatment.

Whittier Street Health Center supports Cholesterol Education Month through the following mix of clinical services, nutrition counseling, chronic disease management, and community-based prevention programs:

Cardiology and Heart Health Management: Blood pressure monitoring, lipid panel screening, medication management, and risk-reduction counseling for patients with high cholesterol or cardiovascular risk factors.

Primary Care Screening: Routine cholesterol testing (LDL, HDL, triglycerides).

Nutrition Counseling: Registered dieticians offer individualized plans emphasizing heart-healthy eating, fiber intake, low-saturated-fat diets, and culturally responsive meal strategies.

Diabetes Management: Education on carbohydrate balance, weight management, and metabolic health – all key components of cholesterol control.

Fitness and Wellness Programs: Group exercise classes and coaching supported weight loss, improved lipid profiles, and cardiovascular fitness.

Health Education Workshops: Community sessions include heart-healthy food choices, label reading, and chronic disease prevention topics relevant to cholesterol.

Together, Whittier’s programs strengthen cholesterol prevention and management across our community, advancing heart health and reducing long-standing inequities.
