National Foot Health Awareness Month

April is National Foot Health Awareness Month—a time to step into health-promoting habits and routines to put your best foot forward. It’s tempting to take for granted the incredible work our feet perform for us daily; helping to support our body weight, stabilize our balance, and move us through the world. These vital functions underscore the connections between maintaining proper foot health and our overall wellness. Still, foot problems remain widely prevalent and under-addressed among the general population, with as many as 80% of adults reporting foot pain in 2024. Foot pain can stem from pre-existing health conditions as well as individual, lifestyle, and environmental factors, including:

  • Age— as you get older, the soles of your feet flatten, increasing the risk of foot pain
  • Gender— women are more likely to experience foot pain than men
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes, Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), and other conditions that inhibit circulation in the feet and legs
  • Injury and/or overuse from physical demands
  • High body mass index (BMI) and obesity
  • Poorly-fitting footwear

If you’re experiencing foot pain, letting it go untreated can lead to more serious complications, including chronic discomfort, mobility issues, and changes to your gait that may impact other parts of your body and your quality of life. Fortunately, foot pain is often preventable and treatable with the right health care. At Whittier Street Health Center, our specialty Podiatry and Orthopedics clinics provide a range of services to individuals seeking support for acute and chronic foot health problems and can make referrals to physical therapy and preventive care. April is National Foot Health Awareness Month! Our feet carry us through all the ups and downs of life, so it’s important to give them the care they deserve. Wearing comfortable, supportive shoes, stretching, moisturizing, and bathing regularly to reduce the risk of fungal infections are small but important steps we can take to put our best foot forward.

Whittier Street Health Center offers a podiatry clinic with a full range of foot care services.
