National Physical Fitness & Sports Month: Breaking Barriers to Wellness in Our Communities
Celebrated each May, National Physical Fitness and Sports Month encourages people of all ages to engage in regular physical activity and sports and serves as a reminder that physical activity is vital for long term health and well-being.
Engaging in physical activity has proven to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It also lowers stress, anxiety, and depression while improving sleep quality. But for those living in underserved communities where there exist significant barriers to regular physical activity, lack of exercise isn’t always about motivation – it’s often about access, environment, and structural inequities.
Many marginalized neighborhoods lack access to safe, walkable spaces. Gyms, recreation centers, and youth sports programs often cost more than families can afford or are unreachable in the absence of transportation.
Whittier Street Health Center plays a vital role in advancing physical activity in our communities by combining high-quality medical care with accessible fitness programs. Located on the first floor of our Tremont Street building, Whittier’s Fitness Center is open to all – patients, community residents, and health center employees. With close to 7,000 square feet dedicated to health, fitness, and wellness, the fitness center contains treadmills, elliptical equipment, weight machines, free weights, fitness bikes, and a room for classes in Zumba, yoga, and aerobics.
As part of our Wellness Institute, Fitness Center programs include individual fitness training, nutrition counseling, exercise classes, and stress reduction activities. We even offer sessions with a Life Coach.
At Whittier Street Health Center we recognize that the path to wellness involves motivation, goal setting, and commitment. We’re here to educate, encourage, and empower all who come through our doors as they begin and continue their road to fitness and well-being.
