Recognizing National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about a critical issue that affects millions of individuals and families worldwide. Today, about a quarter of women and 1 in 7 men will experience physical violence by an intimate partner during their life. Homicide by an intimate partner is the leading cause of death for pregnant women, and over half of female homicide victims are killed by a current or former male intimate partner. This month serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of understanding, preventing, and addressing domestic violence in all its forms.
Domestic violence isn’t limited to physical abuse; it encompasses emotional, psychological, and financial abuse as well. Between 30 and 40 percent of Americans are impacted by sexual abuse, physical violence, or stalking — including online — by an intimate partner throughout their lifetimes. It affects people from all walks of life, no matter their age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status. Awareness is crucial, as many victims suffer in silence, often feeling isolated and afraid to seek help.
To mark National Domestic Violence Awareness month, Whittier Street Health Center is running a series of events to bring awareness to different forms of domestic violence. The events, every Thursday in October from 12:30PM – 2:30 PM, will be held on the 2nd Floor of Whittier’s Frederica M. Williams Building, 1290 Tremont Street, Roxbury, MA 02120.
