Whittier’s Back to School BBQ Set for August 7th

  • July 27, 2026

It’s hard to believe but back to school season is already here! A new school year can stir up a range of emotions for children and parents alike – including anxiety over the cost of school supplies.

If numbers tell the tale, consider this; according to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average cost of basic school supplies per child in 2026 year is $145, compared to around $130 two years ago. This figure reflects only the core items kids need for a typical school year, such as notebooks, pencils, pens, markers, rulers, lunch bags, and backpacks.

As families absorb these higher costs for basic school supplies, the strain on other everyday needs throughout our community become increasingly evident. Whittier serves a diverse patient community, with 92% living below 200% of the federal poverty level and 82% residing in public housing – a reality that underscores why events, like our Back-to-School BBQ matter, offering some measure of relief from the growing financial pressures of school preparation.

In a caring effort to support families as the new school year approaches, Whittier Street Health Center will hold its Annual Back to School BBQ on Friday, August 7, from 2pm-6pm in the health center’s parking lot at 1290 Tremont Street in Roxbury. A Whittier tradition since 2003, the event provides students in our community with the materials needed to ensure they are ready for the start of the new academic year.

At this years’ BBQ, we will distribute over 500 backpacks – each stocked with essential school supplies, including folders, pencils, pens and spiral notebooks – to Whittier patients under the age of 18. The event also provides an opportunity for families to connect with one another and enjoy an afternoon of food, music, fun and a shared sense of anticipation for the new school year ahead!
