Women’s Health Month: A Call to Close the Equity Gap
Aimed to empower women to prioritize their health and well-being, Women’s Health Month is recognized every May and while the intention of this national observance is universal, its impact is particularly significant for women with limited access to care.
For mission-driven organizations like Whittier Street Health Center, this month is a call to action, serving as yet another opportunity to break down barriers, expand access to essential services, and ensure that every woman – regardless of age, race, ethnicity or circumstance – has the support needed to live a healthy life.
There is reality-driven data to support the truth that women in marginalized communities face significantly worse health outcomes than those in affluent neighborhoods. Life expectancy in women living in parts of Roxbury is nearly 23 years lower than in the Back Bay – this according to a 2023 report from the Boston Public Health Commission.
In our continued mission, determination, dedication, and resolve to close that far too wide gap, Whittier Street Health Center offers a comprehensive range of women’s health services to support women at every stage of life, with a strong focus on prevention, access, and culturally responsive care. These services include, but are not limited to:
- Annual physicals
- Preventive screenings
- Vaccinations
- Chronic disease management
- Gynecological exams, Pap smears and HPV testing
- Prenatal, pregnancy, and postpartum care
- Mammograms
- Mental health counseling
- Substance use support
- Nutrition counseling
- Domestic violence support resources
While Women’s Health Month is observed in May, the urgent, ongoing work required to safeguard that every woman has the opportunity to thrive is year in and year out.
As we honor Women’s Health Month, we reaffirm our commitment to connection and care with women in every community, to supporting their well-being, and to championing the health equity they deserve. In that spirit we invite you to join us for our annual Mother’s Day Event on May 8th, from 12 – 1:30 PM in our Community Education Room.
